The Native Council of PEI
The mission of the Native Council is the self-governing Indigenous Representative Organization for Indigenous people residing off-reserve across ancestral Mi’kmaq territory in PEI (Epekwitk).
Grandmother's House
Grandmother’s House was NCPEI’s first ever women’s shelter and was founded in 2005. Its primary goal was to support vulnerable women and to meet their survival needs in a safe environment, using Indigenous culture as the primary approach.
During its time Grandmother’s House hosted numerous coordinating gatherings of local women's organizations who work with vulnerable women. The safe nature of the facility was seen as an appealing quality to facilitate comfortable liaison among the organizations.
Residents were encouraged to look at themselves in a holistic way, not as experienced in some other mainstream approaches which tend to focus on specific issues. Taking a trauma informed approach, the program monitored and supported survival issues, such as securing physical safety, food and clothing.
Unfortunately, due to lack of sufficient, stable funding, the House was forced to close its doors in 2015. Since that time, the NCPEI has advocated faithfully for the resources to reestablish a similar support for Women in PEI.
THE MMIWG NATIONAL INQUIRY
The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls revealed that persistent and deliberate human and Indigenous rights violations and abuses are the root cause behind Canada’s staggering rates of violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people.
New Funding, New Support
Following the release of the MMIWG Final Report (call 4.7) the federal government announced new funding to expand supports for Indigenous women, children and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people escaping gender-based violence.
